Ypsilanti Brewers Guild Summer Festival

The Ann Arbor, Michigan, area is where I live and work, and where I "drink locally". It is not only the home of excellent brewpub beer (click here to learn about Ann Arbor's "hop spots"); but also the summer gathering place for Michigan's craft brewers and those who appreciate good beer.

This year's Summer Beer Festival will take place on Saturday, July 26, from 1 to 6 pm. It is presented by the Michigan Brewers Guild as part of its effort to increase public awareness of and interest in Michigan-made beer. The Guild describes the event as an educational tasting, a way of promoting the state's beer, and an opportunity to learn about its brewing industry.

The festival will be held in Ypsilanti's Frog Island Park, an outdoor venue that can accommodate 3,500 festival-goers. The park is located in Ypsilanti's historic Depot Town district, which is home to antique stores, restaurants, a farmer's market, a vintage car museum, and two taverns.

This year's festival will provide an opportunity to sample from more than 120 beers by over 30 Michigan breweries. Brewery staff will be on hand to tell more about the beer, make recommendations, and answer questions. There will also be live music and fresh, brew-friendly food.

Admission, which includes tokens for 12 three-ounce samples, is $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Additional tokens will be available for 50 cents each. Tickets can be ordered online through the Guild's website, www.michiganbrewersguild.org, any participating brewery, or by calling 248.988.7566.

Last year's festival sold out and, while organizers are making more tickets available for this year's event, they suggest getting tickets in advance, or arriving at the park early (gates open at noon), to avoid being shut out.
